Audience Profile

Audience Profile
Steve is 22 and lives in York. He is an avid fan of many musical genres, ranging from indie and rock to dance/electronic. However, he is also fan of classic rock and roll band such as The Rolling Stones and The Who. He is currently a student, who dreams of being involved in the music production industry. He has little disposable income, however what he does earn from his part time job, he will always spend on music magazines, CD’s or even the odd vinyl.
He attends live gigs on a regular basis, preferring to see bands playing in smaller music venues than in arenas and stadiums. He says the Cockpit in Leeds is his favourite venue for live music.
Annually, he returns with his friends to Leeds Festival, however this year due to the continued decrease in the standard of acts, he is travelling across Europe with friends, finishing at Exit Festival in Novi-Sad, Serbia. He is keen on seeing as much of the world as he can before he has a full time job, and thinks having a new music festival experience can make him fall back in love with Leeds festival.
He has previously read other indie rock magazines, however he has become disillusioned at how formulaic they all are, so has begun branching out, into lesser known brands of magazine.
Although music is his main passion, Steve also enjoys sports, comedy (whether it be stand-up or in films) and television dramas.

Magazine front pages

This is a front cover taken from NME magazine, featuring the White Stripes. The colour scheme used is red, black and white, which has always been associated with rock music and The White Stripes in particular, who always wear red, black or white clothing when performing.
The photography used has been done in a photo-shoot, rather than a live performance.
The magazine has the mast-head “NME” written in the top left hand corner, also in red, white and black which reflects that it is an indie/rock magazine. There is also a list in the bottom corner, giving the audience an idea of what and who else is featured in the magazine. This helps to attract readers who may not be interested in the band that are featured on the cover. Also on the cover is a free gift (A White Strpies CD in this case) which is another method often used by producers.
The fonts used are very simple, using capitals for almost all the text on the cover. This gives the cover greater appeal and gives it a certain authority. Continuing with the colour scheme of the cover, the text is all black or white.
NME magazine is published by IPC Media which is the British branch of the American publishing company, Time Inc. This shows that they have years of experience in multiple different genres of magazine, and have therefore tried to appeal to multiple different target audiences.
